Mission and Goals

The mission of Westside Middle School, as an exemplary model of early adolescent education, is to provide a quality, success-oriented program for our students through a caring school/family/community partnership.

Located in the heart of the Westside community, Westside Middle School serves about 950 7th and 8th grade students. A recognized Blue Ribbon school, WMS received special recognition for its technology program and in 2008 initiated a one-to-one laptop program in grade 8. In 2014, the one-to-one was expanded to 7th graders.   TeamMates mentoring program connects students with mentors who help them grow academically and socially. A strategic planning process assures implementation of best practices and fosters and maintains high performance. Interdisciplinary teaming and teaching, flexible scheduling, differentiated teaching, and an active advisor-advisee program are vehicles for success for all students. WMS has taken great strides in strengthening its Response to Intervention programs in reading, behavior management, and academic support.

Westside Middle School’s continuous school improvement plan is designed to help staff address the academic achievement of students. WMS staff members are committed to addressing the intellectual needs of students by making appropriate academic accommodations for all students and aligning district and program outcomes to improve academic proficiency for all students. WMS staff members are working together on a school-wide goal focusing on the improvement of reading literacy achievement for all students. Other school goals include providing a school environment which is inviting, supportive and safe; developing an understanding of, and respect for, diversity; strengthening technology connections between school and home; building resiliency through health, wellness and safety; and providing multifaceted guidance and support services.
